What is two-stage implant surgery?
Two-stage implant surgery is a traditional approach where a dental implant is placed below the gum line and left to osseointegrate for several months, followed by a second procedure to expose the implant and attach the abutment and crown.
In two-stage implant surgery, a dentist places the implant fixture into the jawbone and then covers it completely with gum tissue. This allows the implant to integrate with the bone over several months (typically 3 to 6 months for the lower jaw, 4 to 8 months for the upper jaw) without disturbance from chewing or other oral activity. Once osseointegration is confirmed, the patient returns for the second stage: the dentist uncovers the implant, places a healing abutment or temporary restoration, and eventually attaches the final crown or bridge.
This staged approach differs from single-stage implants, where the implant is placed and a portion remains visible through the gum from the start. Many implant dentistry specialists in Chicago use two-stage surgery because the buried healing phase generally reduces complications and infection risk. It also allows bone density to fully develop around the implant, which can strengthen the long-term foundation. The extended timeline requires patience, but patients gain the benefit of a more predictable outcome and a restoration that can match adjacent teeth in both appearance and function.
