Nerve mapping is the use of advanced imaging to identify the location of the inferior alveolar nerve before placing dental implants in the lower jaw, allowing surgeons to avoid nerve damage.

When placing dental implants in the lower jaw, the inferior alveolar nerve runs through the bone and must be avoided during surgery. Nerve mapping uses high-resolution imaging, typically CT scans or cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), to locate this nerve's exact path before the implant is inserted.
