What are mini dental implants?

Mini dental implants are narrow-diameter titanium fixtures measuring roughly 3 to 4 millimeters in width, compared to standard implants which are usually 5 millimeters or wider. They function the same way as conventional implants-osseointegrating into the jawbone to provide a stable foundation for prosthetic teeth-but require less bone volume and often need minimal or no bone grafting before placement.

The primary distinction lies in their size and application. Standard implants anchor single crowns or support multi-tooth bridges in patients with adequate bone density. Mini implants are favored when bone resorption has occurred after tooth loss, when a patient has a narrow ridge, or when placing implants in tight spaces between remaining teeth. They are especially common for stabilizing lower dentures, where four to six mini implants can be fitted along the front of the jawbone to prevent the denture from shifting and floating during eating or speaking.

Mini implants typically have a one-piece design, meaning the post and abutment are fused together, which simplifies surgery and reduces overall treatment time compared to two-piece standard implants. However, they generally carry lower load-bearing capacity, making them less suitable for patients with heavy bite forces or extensive tooth replacement needs.
